First off, this was supposed to be an easy custom. A couple of part swaps, a little paint, and it would be done. Instead, this is what happens when a simple idea turns out to be not so simple at all.
The base figure is a superposeable Faith from the Buffy line, same body a what I used for
Callisto and
Mystique. Since this costume shares a lot of elements with Callisto, I thought I had it made. Then it started going to pot. First, it turns out that I bought the wrong Faith figure. The one I got on sale didn't have the set of bare-skinned arms, so I had to get an extra fodder figure (a Buffy) that did. That was an easy one to solve.
Next, I discovered the head I was going to use (from the Marvel Legends Storm) was too small. I was going to take Storm's head, yank off the hair, and sculpt a mohawk. Easy peasy. Except without the hair, that head is tiny. ML Storm has a condition known as Reverse Bullseye-tis.
I had the option to shelve the custom until I found a proper head. Instead, I decided to try sculpting one. I dremeled down Faith's head (Eliza Dushku should thank me for erasing it) except for the mouth. I did about 3 rounds of sculpting on the head, cursing all the way. Why would anyone want to do this?
Each round, I solicited feedback from the guys on Fwooshnet.com - big thanks to
Actorjez,
GrownNerd, and
RoboKillah for their continued feedback and criticism. Don't blame them if you think Storm is ugly - I've done what's within my capabilities at present - and it's really rough.
I did a swap at the knee with ML Storm so she could have her high-heeled boots. This also did not go easily, as I couldn't get one pin inserted on one side of her right leg. In the end, I replaced the pin with a segment of a wooden shish kebab skewer, tightened with a generous application of RC tire glue.
The rest is just standard blocking and tackling. Rubber bands for belts, choker, and arm band. The studs on the choker and arm band were applied with the tip of the skewer that I used to replace the pin. I sculpted the glove cuffs, as I thought a rubber band there would look too uniform. Finally, I used more bead string to top off her tube top.
So, please do let me know what you think. It's my first headsculpt, so I'm prepared for criticism.
