Nick Fury

nickfury1.jpgI'm beginning to believe Nick Fury's hype - if he didn't exist, the whole Marvel universe would fall apart.  He's getting so much exposure these days that I can't pick up a comic without seeing him overthrowing a government, manipulating people, or showing a naive hero that sometimes you have to do very bad things - all for the greater good of the old U.S. of A.

While we already got a Nick Fury from Marvel Legends, he was a little too big and a little too pretty.  I wanted something old and gnarly.
This custom was inspired by two really talented customizers on fwooshnet.com - Industrial and Dustin Baetz.  Indy came up with a great recipe, using a ML Bullseye to keep him playable.  Dustin captured the old warrior look that I wanted, and went crazy with the kinds of costume details I wanted.

I didn't have a spare ML Punisher head - both guys had used it to great effect - so I had to improvise.  The head is a cast of the Ninja Wolverine from the new X-Men line.  I shaved down the mutton chops and most of the hair and then resculpted the jaw and hair.  I hollowed out the inside of the head and attached it to a nub that used to be Bullseye's head.

The costume details were mostly brought over from the original figure.  I did add some of the costume seams using bead string.  The strap on his arm is plastic lacing with some extra capsules from the belt, which had to be trimmed down to fit the narrower waist.  The zipper tag is a sliver of plastic lacing with a Sculpey ring.  I must be getting spoiled by the durability of Apoxie Sculpt, because I attempted to fiddle with the zipper tag after it was done and snapped it in two.  I did manage to glue it back together (I still had to take pictures, after all) but it's not quite as round as it used to be.

I ended up using the original legs and lower arms from the ML Fury.  The legs on the original fury attach at a swivel mid-hip.  To attach them to Bullseye's ball-jointed hips, I first built up the socket using Oatey's, and then sculpted over that with Apoxie Sculpt to smooth it out.  If you look too closely, you'll see I was a little messy, especially on his left hip.  The lower arms were just cut off from the original figure.  I added a socket to attach them to Bullseye's arms - that gives them a "spinning meat" swivel on the forearm.

Finally, the gun is from Dr. Doom, since the original was too big for the new, smaller torso.
